Documentary Storytelling and Adventure Filmmaking

Process.

Often times, the best stories are hidden in the most precarious places. Whether buried deep in our hearts or over the cliff’s edge, these stories may be in the places we don’t often dare to go. I value every story I’ve been faced with. I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to pay respect to the power of our stories. I aim to showcase them in a way that truly does them honor and justice.

Empathy.

I consider the camera to be a tool for channeling empathy, offering a window into the aspects of the world that we may not otherwise be exposed to. I’m focused on capturing an experience, a feeling, a nuance, the story. The films we make today will mark our time in history and as a filmmaker that’s not something I take lightly.

Purpose.

Passion and purpose are integral in the filmmaking process. Whether I’m directing my own vision or collaborating with another filmmaker, my first step in the process is to find connection to the purpose and the passion for the story being told.

Very few places can’t be reached.

Filmmaking has taken me all over the world and has exposed me to people and places that I never thought I’d meet. I often work lean and nimble to keep me present and connected to the scene. Equipped for adventure and mentally prepared for potentially hard truths. I’m ready to explore rugged terrain. Both literally and figuratively.

Ethnographic Practices.

The real story is often below superficial appearances. It’s typically seated in the behaviors, the culture and beliefs of the characters. After spending time listening and exploring, the true essence of a story works its way to the surface.

Respect.

I hold a high standard for respect when capturing other people’s stories. At the end of the day, it’s important to me that everybody is at peace with the filmmaking process. I believe everyone should be portrayed accurately and respectfully.

Built to Travel.

Though many great stories take place everyday in my hometown, I’m drawn to explore and experience stories all around the world. I’ve learned so much about myself through my travels and I always return with a sense of humility and gratitude for this life I get to live.

I’ve honed my remote production process to be efficient, yet robust. I can do a lot with a simple, well thought out kit.

I live just a short drive from Seattle and from there I can connect with any corner of the world with just a few quick moves.

I’d consider it an honor to follow a story with you, wherever that may lead us.
